10 Video Game Clichés That We Secretly Love

3. The Endgame Boss Rush

Ending a video game with one epic boss fight against a single villain is one thing, but sometimes developers decide that just isn't good enough, and would rather vomit an exhausting army of bosses at the player one after another.

There's surely no greater offender of this than Square Enix, who just loves to do this in both the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts games.

Many entries into both series conclude with an hour or two of almost wall-to-wall bosses, and while sometimes frustrating, the thrill of prevailing over a relentless assault is unmistakable.

The Yakuza games are also notorious for springing several bosses on the player in a row near the end of the games, and while almost comical in its excess, it's certainly an easy way to heighten a game's sense of finality in the closing stretch.

Again, it can be annoying, especially if the game simply makes you battle a fleet of bosses you've already encountered, but it can also serve as a bracingly intense rite-of-passage for players before the end credits finally roll.
