10 Video Game Clichés That We Secretly Love
4. Double Jump
The double jump is one of the most common mechanics across platformers and action games, yet how often do you ever really stop to consider how utterly ridiculous it is?
In the context of our own tangible world, characters being able to jump into the air and then do it again without any physical object to launch off is just totally absurd.
And yet, it's a mechanic so useful that it feels like second nature, to the extent that we get pretty pissed off when it isn't available right away.
Despite double jump's abject silliness, it's so pervasive because it just feels so satisfying. After all, can anyone among us name a game that might be improved without double jump? Didn't think so.
Yet because double jump is just so passe these days, platformers are now making triple jump a thing - if Ori and the Will of the Wisps is any indication, anyway.
