10 Video Game Developers No Longer Making Games For YOU
7. Square Enix
What They've Done: Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Vagrant Story, Xenogears
What They're Up to Now: Re-releasing/remaking Final Fantasy games, eventually making Kingdom Hearts 3
There was a time in the 90's where Squaresoft (before the merger) were synonymous with about every role-playing game going on consoles. Final Fantasy had its breakthrough success with VII, whilst Chrono Trigger dominated the SNES market before its sequel on the PlayStation.
One-off's like Vagrant Story and Xenogears also reviewed highly, cementing Square as a champion for story-based adventures.
Yet in recent years, SquareEnix have turned more into a publisher role, taking over established brands like Tomb Raider, Deus Ex and Just Cause. For a while, it seemed like that was their focus.
But we did get a long-delayed Kingdom Hearts III last year (the jury's still out on whether that's a good or bad thing), as well as numerous older Final Fantasy's being remastered. The crowning glory though?
Only remaking Final Fantasy VII, twenty three years after its initially release. Anticipation is high for this one, weird episodic payment model aside.
Perhaps this'll open the way for more classics to be remastered? Vagrant Story reboot, anyone?
