10 Video Game Douchebags You Can’t Help But Love

6. Conker €“ Conker the Squirrel Series

Why He€™s A Douche: In the later iterations of this Conker (from Conker€™s Bad Fur Day onwards), he€™s a foul-mouthed, materialistic, greedy little drunk, who€™s only real saving grace is the cutesiness that being a woodland critter affords him. But then again, even that only gets you so far in life. Only the douchiest of squirrels would count shotguns and throwing knives amongst their preferred arsenal. Conker€™s Bad Fur Day is a direct parody of Rare€™s cuter, kid friendly platformers on the N64 like Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64; but poses the question €˜what would happen if we inserted a little douche bag into one of those worlds€™? Why You Love Him: Conker was a breath of fresh air for an adult audience that craved something a little bit more our age, even though we were still (and are still, if you€™re reading this piece) as childish as ever. You love him for the exactly same reason he€™s a douche bag; you love him in spite of it. Rare had originally planned another cutesy 3d platformer, but changed their minds about the target audience just before hitting production. This nasty, scatological little drunkard squirrel is the very reason for Bad Fur Day's success - it was the insulin to the diabetes inducing sweetness of Rare€™s previous titles. Despite the characters inherent and purposeful douche-baggery, above all else, he€™s often very, very funny. And I€™ve said it before: humour gets you far in life.
