It was all a dream will never not be a cliche even when it’s technically, “It was all a nightmare” which applies pretty strongly to the 1989 Bandai action platformer for NES, Monster Party.

To say this game is a little weird would be a huge understatement. You play Mark, a child who gets drafted into conflict by an armoured eagle monster called Bert to battle other monsters. Evil monsters. This is one of those games that I’m sure was marketed to children but probably shouldn’t have been. You go through the game fighting all manner of beasties from a toothy venus fly trap to skeletons, giant spiders, fish heads on legs, and what I can only describe as a bouncing tempura prawn.

Okay, some of the monsters are less scary than others.

After this entire ordeal, which isn’t a breeze mind you, your old pal Bert gives you a present from which a beautiful princess arises. Sweet, so far so good. Except she then immediately turns into a horrible monster and summons more horrible monsters, Mark gets freaked out, is eaten alive, and then wakes up because it was all a dream.

I’m not entirely sure this ending isn’t so horrific that it’s actually amazing, so let me get back to you on that.
