10 Video Game Endings Where Nothing You Did Matters

4. Prey (2017)

The Dark Pictures Anthology Little Hope

While it'd be slightly unfair to say that Prey's ending is nothing more than "It was all a dream!," it's certainly close enough to that worn-out trope to leave many players feeling a tad underwhelmed.

In the game's post-credits scene, protagonist Morgan wakes up to learn that the events of the entire game were a simulation and we haven't even been playing as Morgan, but rather a captured Typhon implanted with the real Morgan's memories, in an attempt to teach the alien creature human empathy.

As Morgan's brother Alex informs you, the Typhon have invaded Earth, after which Alex and his colleagues judge your performance throughout the game.

If you failed to demonstrate empathy, you'll be killed, but if you're deemed empathetic, you'll be given a choice - kill everyone, or forge an alliance between the humans and the Typhon.

It's definitely a bold and provocative idea, yet it's tough to blame players for feeling miffed that the entirety of the game wasn't actually happening while they were playing through it.

Plus, with Prey flopping commercially, we never got to see the payoff in a sequel. What a waste.
