10 Video Game Finales That Left You Speechless

5. The Last Of Us

the last of us ending
Naughty Dog

The Last of Us will always stand the test of time because it refuses to go down the route of most post-apocalyptic media. All game long, the title has you on the edge of your seat, wondering whether Joel or Ellie is going to meet some kind of tragic fate, but developers at Naughty Dog would never do something as predictable as killing off one of their leads to stir up drama.

Instead, they have Joel embark on a full-on murderous rampage through the Firefly base, home to the last vestiges of a resistance group hoping to cure the zombie outbreak, wiping out these supposed 'good guys' and stopping Ellie from undergoing a surgery that could theoretically save the human race.

And in the end, after killing some of the most sympathetic characters in the game, Joel lies to Ellie about what he did to keep her by his side. You can tell she doesn't believe him entirely, but accepts the lie anyway to enjoy their future without having to live with burden of knowing what really happened.
