Part of the reason The Witcher 3 is considered one of the greatest action RPGs of all time is due to its dedication to fully immersing the player in Geralt's world.

Aside from a couple of quick references and easter eggs, the game never breaks away from its narrative... which is why the one time it goes fully out-of-character, it feels absolutely shocking and hilarious!

The quest "Equine Phantoms" is a bizarre side mission that features Geralt and his trusty steed Roach solving the mystery of an angry horse spirit.

The mission's unique premise is not unlike the other, more grounded Witcher contracts, as it involves Geralt drinking a potion that allows him to communicate with Roach.

This setup is already bizarre as is, but the developers decided to make it even more shocking by letting Geralt ask some pretty meta questions to Roach about why she appears on rooftops and inside houses whenever he summons her.

The dialogue is an obvious reference to Roach's buggy AI spawning her in strange places, which, seeing as The Witcher 3 is rarely this meta about its own mechanics, makes the scene feel even stranger.

Well, if there's ever an appropriate moment to get meta, a fever dream conversation with a horse is definitely the one.
