10 Video Game Franchises That Deserve Their Own Netflix Series
3. Metal Gear Solid
Fans have been begging for a Metal Gear Solid movie for years. Unfortunately, what few seem to recognise is that such a film could never work. At best, it could pull off something akin to the Assassin's Creed or Hitman films, incorporating some familiar elements into a story far too big for its runtime.
The problem is (hate to say it) Hideo Kojima. A brilliant game designer and storyteller, Kojima crafts wonderfully complex worlds for his characters to live in, play in, and commit murders in. These worlds, however, only work with a large cast of colourful characters heaping hours of exposition onto the player. Even then, some aspects of this story can be a bit hard to follow.
A Netflix series could handle this in a couple of ways. First, the series could spread certain plot reveals over multiple episodes, allowing for some to resonate with even more clarity than they did in the games.
Throughout all of this, viewers would get to really know and enjoy some of the fan-favourite characters that formerly served as little more than quick boss fights. If you enjoyed battling Quiet, Laughing Octopus or Psycho Mantis for a few minutes in the games, just imagine watching their stories unfold over an hour-long episode, or even multiple episodes if the story warrants it.
All the while, we can watch as Snake finds uses for the wide array of weapons and abilities in his arsenal... including, hopefully, the ineffably stealthy cardboard box.
