10 Video Game Franchises That Need To Die
4. Sonic
Sonic was fun and inventive in the era of platformers, but in the modern gaming environment, the spiky smurf couldn't hack it. Although he undoubtedly has the speed to match the moneymakers like Overwatch and Call of Duty, Sonic lost its selling power with its recent incarnations.
The issue clearly isn't the genre. Some of the most interesting games released in the past few years have been platformers, but where Limbo and Ori And The Blind Forest provided intriguing stories or gave us gorgeous visuals, Sonic tried to bring back the days of old.
Throwing in weird, unconvincing romances to try and liven up the gameplay, the Sonic games of today are doing nothing but tarnishing the name of what used to be a great franchise.
The developers are clearly still relying on the name, hoping that it can draw a casual player base back through nostalgic appeal. Instead of seeing what's working in today's platformer genre, they're rehashing the same gameplay that made the series popular in its heyday in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Which is exactly where the series should have stayed.
