10 Video Game “Heroes” You Really Shouldn’t Be Rooting For
2. Dante (DmC: Devil May Cry)
Dante – the original – was charismatic and endearing. In 2008, the character was completely overhauled with the release of DmC: Devil May Cry, his appearance and personality transformed considerably. For one thing, his endearing nonchalant, carefree disposition was completely overhauled, replaced with a more cynical, immature – and, some would say, irritating – attitude, complete with an overreliance on pointless insults, self-aggrandising and casual disinterestedness, completely lacking in any semblance of self-awareness.
This version of the character – who now resembled a moody frontman in an early 2000s nu-metal band – became universally despised. He was unrecognisable – in appearance, personality and motivations – committing acts of heroism out of disinterestedness. He was unnecessarily aggressive and mean-spirited – a grown man with a teenager’s disposition – barely mustering the enthusiasm to save the world, which made him impossible to root for.
