While there's no scientific fact to back it up, boxing must create more underdog stories than any other sport in the world. Even outside of real world events, there are countless entertainment products which feature the smaller, less talented boxer stealing the victory from a guy twice his size. Punch Out exemplifies this better than most and it's protagonist Little Mac, despite his weedy persona, has become a cult gaming hero. When compared to some of the fighters he goes up against, Little Mac should stand no chance in the ring. Most of his opponents have the ability to empty his heart meter with one move and his punches wouldn't put dents in a cream cake. Still, through sheer persistence, Little Mac conquers all and, in the branded NES version, finds himself in a climatic showdown with the one and only Mike Tyson. Just look at the above image; how on earth is that regarded as a fair fight? Still, defeating Mike Tyson is achievable, albeit massively challenging. Doing so completes one of gaming's biggest underdog stories as Little Mac goes from absolute nobody to becoming king of the (virtual) boxing universe; that underdog spirit is just one of the reasons why people are celebrating Mac's first appearance in the upcoming Smash Bros games.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
