10 Video Game Mechanics All Players HATE
7. Timed Missions
Timed missions done correctly can add a little tension and lend a sense of urgency to a story.
Unfortunately, more often than not, these missions feel forced, usually with the time limit explained in the most cursory of manners through a single line of voice-over dialogue from an NPC, and you're expected to hurry along on the whim of the AI.
There may be a ticking clock, or simply some visible impending destruction chasing you along, but the worst of all timed missions are the ones that give you no visual representation of how much time you have left, instead just flashing you an insta-fail and a rage-inducing game over screen.
Timed missions are often shoe-horned in for the most convoluted of reasons, and although once upon a time they seemed fresh and fun, they have since become little more than a recurring annoyance.
