10 Video Game Mechanics All Players HATE

8. Unwinnable Boss Fights

Sometimes, game developers feel it necessary to teach us a little lesson in humility by throwing in an unwinnable fight.

Now, in terms of story or introducing players to a game's mechanics, there's usually some way that an unwinnable boss battle can make sense. A notable example of this is Demon's Souls, where the main character's death is the jumping off point for the story, meaning that you must die to progress from the tutorial.

Unwinnable fights, while occasionally necessary for the story, always tend to feel a little cheap. This is felt all too keenly when the player manages to beat the near-impossible boss, only to be presented with a cutscene in which the boss in question somehow gains the upper hand and rewards your efforts with a swift and unceremonious death.

It stings, and often, it could have been handled in a much less time consuming manner. It could be generally worse, but the unwinnable boss fight has become such an overused trope that we're all so tired of being beaten despite our best efforts.
