10 Video Game Mechanics You Totally Ignored (But Shouldn't Have)
6. Level Scaling - Final Fantasy VIII
If you thought Junctioning was the only mechanic in Final Fantasy VIII the vast majority of players didn't understand, you'd be wrong. People acquainted with RPGs in general may grind like crazy to boost their levels so they'll be strong enough to defeat any enemy.
But not only is this strategy unhelpful in FFVIII, it makes the battles harder. Unlike other instalments in the series, the difficulty in the enemies scales in accordance with Squall's party's level and stats. Basically, the stronger you are, the harder the enemies are.
Now, the way you're supposed to work around this mechanic is to make use of the Junctioning system, since this only boosts the heroes' stats, not the enemies. However, most players didn't know this since they couldn't get the hang of this convoluted system. (Seriously, you can complete the whole game without figuring out the first thing about Junctioning.)
It sounds counter-intuitive but avoiding enemy encounters makes the gameplay easier, even though you'll be at a lower level than normal. It may not be the intended way of playing, but players wouldn't have to resort to this unconventional method if Square devised a better levelling system.
