10 Video Game Mechanics You Totally Ignored (But Shouldn't Have)

5. Shield-Surfing - The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

The world of each Legend of Zelda is vast, to the point where it's easy to get lost in it. Having said that, Breath of the Wild takes this notion to a new level, since the land of Hyrule has never been this immense.

Even though navigating through the scorching deserts and Moblin-infested forests is breathtaking, it takes forever to get from Point A to Point B. Sure, you can teleport around the map, but there are times where you want to explore every nook and cranny, especially while you're on the lookout for Shrines.

However, there's a simple way to get around quickly, especially while trekking downhill. If you hold up your shield while jumping, Link flips it under his feet and starts surfing. With this technique, you can climb down a hill or mountain at incredible speed while still able to survey the area for collectibles or Shrines. On top of that, it makes it easier to evade fast enemies and projectiles.

Despite the fact shield-surfing is straightforward to activate, many players completed BOTW with no knowledge of the mechanic. Although there's plenty of other abilities the game doesn't tell you about, this one would've been handy to know early on.
