10 Video Game Mechanics You Totally Ignored (But Shouldn't Have)
4. Dodge Offset - Bayonetta (Series)
Throughout the Bayonetta franchise, the titular witch can wail on angels and demons with dozens of over-the-top combos. If you want to beat the main campaign on the higher difficulty, you better master these attacks quickly, since they'll reward you with currency, allowing you to purchase power-ups and upgrades.
However, it goes without saying that enemies will try to defend themselves while Bayonetta pummels them, forcing her to constantly evade their assaults. This is a problem since dodging resets the combo, forcing Bayonetta to start from the beginning.
But if players master Dodge Offset, they can avoid attacks while maintaining the flow of a combo. To use it, you have to hold down the attack button while initiating a dodge, then releases the button after the dodge to continue chaining the combo. This mechanic is subtle but extremely powerful, bridging the gap between offence and defence without sacrificing style or efficiency.
Dodge Offset is tough to master, but it's absolutely worth it. Not only will it fill Bayonetta's pockets with enough cash to empty the shops, it makes the fights significantly easier. (Most importantly, it looks badass.)
