As Donkey Kong enters Candy’s Music Shop, some very bow chicka wow wow jazz music plays as the camera pans up her and she struts towards you. She then tells you ‘Candy’s gonna make you feel real good’ and asks if you want her melons. And she’s in a music shop. How much fresh fruit would they really have lying around?
There’s a coquettish little giggle when she finishes speaking, then she invites you to step a little closer so she can show you how to use your instrument. Maybe if Jak had visited more shops like this, he wouldn’t have as much experience beating things, eh?
It’s like the concept meeting started with ‘sexy gorilla’, then once they picked the name Candy everything snowballed. Rewatching this scene as an adult, it’s hard to comprehend that you had absolutely no idea what was being implied as a kid. Ignorance is bliss, I guess.
