10 Video Game Moments We Were Waiting for (That Never Happened)

4. The Battle of Mombasa - Halo 3

Doom Eternal

If any specific aspect of Halo 3 deserves to be singled out for getting the fanbase hyped, it was the Battle of Mombasa. The incalculable destruction the Covenant bestowed upon this Kenyan city serves as a major component in the threequel's overarching narrative. As such, it was believed that certain missions would involve Master Chief being in the thick of this devastating war.

However, the player never takes part in the battle, since Mombasa has been mostly destroyed by the time Master Chief and his team touch down there. Despite the fact this city-wide bloodbath is referenced through environmental storytelling, it's never directly shown. Even the clips of Mombasa's destruction featured in the trailers are nowhere to be seen in the game itself.

Though the Cortana mission has Master Chief eliminating insurgents in the Mombasa streets, the skirmish doesn't resemble the cataclysmic assault highlighted in the promotions.

Now, this shouldn't take away from the fact Halo 3 is one of the defining entries in an already remarkable franchise. But even the most die-hard Halo fans were a little peeved the Mombasa section didn't play out the way it was advertised.
