3. Challenging The Ancients - Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Eternal Darkness opens with Alexandra Roivas returning to her grandfather's home after he's been murdered. While investigating his death, Alexandra discovers her grandfather was part of a sect that swore to destroy a great evil summoned by a Roman centurion called Pious Augustus millennia ago.
Depending on player's choices, Pious will develop an alliance with one of three Ancients - Xel'lotath, Ulyaoth, or Chattur'gha. Though Pious is skilled in the dark arts, his powers are infinitesimal compared to the masters. For this reason, you'd expect Alexandra to ultimately square off with one of these unpronounceable deities.
But that's not the case. When Alexandra finally confronts Pious, he unleashes his dark god upon reality. But what Pious didn't know is Xel'loltath, Ulyaoth, and Chattur'gha have a rock/paper/scissors system in place, so each of them is noticeably weaker than one and stronger than the other.
After entering Pious' lair, Alexandra summons the Ancient that Pious' ally is naturally weak against, destroying them. With Pious untethered to his divine power, Alexandra is able to defeat him.
Although it was annoying that Alexandra didn't fight the Ancients directly, it's understandable why the developers went in this direction. After all, it would've been difficult to design a battle against a foe thousands of times larger than the hero.
Speaking of which...
