As a DC comics character, Batman’s adventures sometimes take him to far darker and more psychologically demanding places than his Marvel counterparts visit. The aforementioned Arkham games are a testament to this fact.

In Batman: Arkham Knight, the Caped Crusader has one of his greatest threats of all time to contend with: Scarecrow’s fear toxin. With his own infected blood, the manifestation of the Joker and the titular character thrown into the mix, it looks like curtains for our hero.

Despite Batman’s best efforts, the Cloudburst machine is activated and the deadly gas dispersed around Gotham City. With Robin himself captured by the enemy, Batman is actually forced to surrender to Scarecrow, powerless. The situation is so dire that he can do nothing as the villain reveals his true identity to everybody.

At his very lowest ebb, Batman prevailed only through the self-sacrifice of Poison Ivy, who was able to remove the gas by transferring her powers to a mighty tree but perished in the process.
