10 Video Game Moments Where You Thought The Villain Would Win

2. Samus Is Almost Killed By Mother Brain: Super Metroid

Speaking of heroic self-sacrifices, one of gaming’s most high-profile examples of such an act occurs in Super Metroid. A plucky little Metroid that could saved the universe, and only Samus herself knew it.

The Metroid series has always revolved around the formidable bounty hunter Samus Aran, a lone wolf who always gets the job done. The games’ primary themes of exploration and isolation are always at the forefront, never more so than in 1994 SNES classic Super Metroid.

At the close of the game, Samus encounters the mighty Mother Brain but is soon overwhelmed by its power. Again, it would be rather fitting with this bleak universe if she’d lost the battle, but right when she’s on the verge of death, she’s saved by the Metroid she ‘befriended’ earlier.

This bold little critter revitalizes and empowers Samus, while leaving Mother Brain reeling. The villain dispatches the Metroid in retaliation, but is destroyed by the rejuvenated Samus in return.
