Gears of War did many things - push waist-high cover walls into the mainstream, make men with bigger shoulders than the pauldrons on a Warcraft character, and throw a terrifying enemy at you: The Kryll.

These flying creatures are like a strange mating of piranha and bat and will tear apart and eat anything in their path. And their path basically contains anything not bathed in light.

In the first game the Kryll are feared by both the humans and their locust enemies. They will eat the locusts just fast as they’ll eat your delicious human linebackers - and your chainsaw gun won’t stop them.

The only person on the planet immune to the Kryll is a locust general named Raam. Raam is basically surrounded by the things who do him no harm. His technique for doing so is never explained.

Which brings us to Raam’s Shadow, a DLC release for Gears of War 3 which canonically takes place before the events of the first game. But in Raam’s Shadow, the locust are able to walk through Kryll without issue - and several of Raam’s lieutenants can even command the aerial menaces.

So, when do the Kryll become dangerous to locusts - and why?
