10 Video Game Remake Character Designs Everyone Hated

If the recent release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake has taught us anything, it's that gamers are a fickle bunch, and that for everyone who loves the way a redesigned character looks, there's going to be someone who feels like you cursed their firstborn simply for making a few nips and tucks.

But sometimes fans can actually agree on whether a design works or not, and in the case of these 10 remake redesigns, it was sadly a decisive thumbs down across the board.

Did these designs derail their respective remakes outright? For the most part no, but they nevertheless spoke to how iconic and elemental a character's look can become, and how upset fans can get when developers make unnecessary changes in the stead of "modernisation."

Needless to say, if a developer is going to alter the fundamentals of an iconic character's design, they need to be damn confident about pulling the trigger beforehand - or face the fanbase's wrath.

These remake redesigns represent the most misguided and ill-received that the industry has to offer...

Dingodile is the dingo-crocodile hybrid who first appears as a boss in Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped, perhaps best remembered for trying to burn Crash to a crisp with a giant flamethrower.

Though 2017's N. Sane Trilogy did a mostly fantastic job of updating the series' cast of delightfully demented characters, Dingodile was the easy weak link among the pack.

For starters, his more grotesque features were softened and rendered more cartoonish, as if to make him less frightening to kids.

This extended to giving him a rounder face, a filed-down set of fangs, and even slapping a pair of trousers on him to make him seem a bit more anthropomorphic and inoffensive.

From aesthetics all the way through to the character's new voiceover, the N. Sane Dingodile just lacks the mischievous menace of his 1998 iteration.
