10 Video Game Review Scores Fans Lost Their MINDS Over
3. Driver 3's Suspicious 9/10s From PSM2 & Xbox World
It's perhaps telling that, for many folks who were terminally online back in 2004, the most memorable thing about the third Driver game is the review controversy which bubbled up just prior to its release.
The much-hyped threequel was touted as the franchise's rebuttal to the hugely successful 3D reinvention of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, yet received totally mediocre reviews from most critics.
There were two startling exceptions, though - PSM2 and Xbox World, both of which awarded the game 9/10 scores.
But given the game's wonky, bug-filled nature, players felt duped by the high scores, with some even suggesting that both outlets had agreed to give Driver 3 effusive praise in exchange for exclusive early review copies.
And so, the scandal "Driv3rgate" was born. While both Driver 3 publisher Atari and the magazines involved refuted any and all accusations, spirited forum discussions debating the situation were more-or-less nuked from the Internet in the years that followed.
