10 Video Game Secrets That Tell HORRIFYING Stories

2. Headcrab Zombies - Half life 2

Last of Us ish
Valve

If you want the best in the business at knowing how to be both subtly and explicitly horrific, you look at those ever frustrating perfectionist hat makers, Valve.

Even the most lighthearted of their games always carry this edge to them, as if something is always going on behind the scenes. This of course all started with Half Life, so it stands to reason that the next Half Life game would one up their underlying creepiness.

In the first game, we all rightly just kinda assumed the headcrab zombies were thoroughly dead, with the head humpers using their dead, mutilated bodies as their equivalent to giant robots.

But then Half Life 2 came along and laughed as it gave us all nightmares.

The headcrab zombies now make horriyfing noises when you encounter them. Worse yet, if you record the noises they make and run them backwards, you'll discover that they're not just garbled nonsense, but cries and pleads for help. The headcrab zombies are still alive as they shamble around, in more pain than the human mind can possibly fathom.

Makes blasting their heads off with a shotgun a lot more merciful, if nothing else...
