10 Video Game Secrets You Can't Unsee

2. Hidden Message - Sonic CD

Despite being conceived as a cute, edgy and massively profitable character to ship Sega's home consoles, it seems Sonic can't quite escape his uncanny ability to send shivers down the spine. Both Sonic.exe and this chilling screen depicting several Blue Hedgehog in a goofy pose with a face that's, well, not Sonic plague the character's existence.

Not dissimilar to the Game Boy's creepy camera antics, using a simple selection of button presses on the game's start-up screen, Sonic's outing on the CD attachment for the Sega Genesis can take a turn for the eerie.

Accessing the game's sound test using select button prompts and changing the three setting to specific numbers, the player is sure to be startled by what appears on screen.

Alongside Sonic's spooky face swap is a note written in Japanese and a frightening --yet catchy-- jingle, signalling that the player ought not to be here.

Almost 30 years later, Sonic CD's strange secret remains etched in the brains of those unfortunate enough to stumble across it. The Sega CD would barely surpass 2 million units sold, and it's hard to believe that this wasn't a factor in its downfall.
