10 Video Game Sequels You Didn't Know Were Coming In 2021
2. Psychonauts 2
Tim Schafer's masterful platformer Psychonauts was a critical smash but commercial dud, shifting just 100,000 units during its initial release period in 2005.
But the advent of digital distribution in the years that followed allowed the game to eventually become a belated hit, and by 2016 it had sold a cool 1.7 million copies.
Though Schafer expressed immediate interest in a sequel following Psychonauts' release, this only became a real possibility following its success on digital storefronts.
After acquiring funding from a number of sources - including $3.8 million from his own crowdfunding platform Fig - Schafer announced Psychonauts 2 at The Game Awards 2015, with many key developmental personnel set to return.
The original 2018 release window was unsurprisingly missed before Microsoft acquired Double Fine in 2019, allowing Schafer to reintroduce elements that initially had to be cut from the game due to costs. This also means that the game will release day-and-date on Xbox Game Pass.
Despite missing its revised 2020 release and now being set for 2021 with optimisations for Xbox Series X, it actually feels like this release date might finally stick. Then again, would yet another delay actually surprise anyone?
