10 Video Game Side Characters That Got Their Own (Better) Spin-Off

1. Luigi - Luigi's Mansion

Out of the two Mario brothers, Luigi is definitely the more developed one, personality-wise. While Mario tends to be your typical silent protagonist, Lugi has distinct character traits that make him a loveable nervous wreck. His cowardly but endearing personality has earned him plenty of fans, possibly more than his big brother, and yet he still takes second place to Mario in most games.

One of the few exceptions is Luigi's Mansion, which, despite being so radically different from Mario's platformers, has earned a huge following thanks to its unique atmosphere that perfectly synergizes with the cowardly character of its green protagonist.

Though no one would expect a spooky, almost horror-like spinoff to be a successful idea, Luigi's Mansion is definitely a massive success. Its third installment was one of the most popular games on Switch at the time of its release, and it's easy to see why.

The premise of a fainthearted plumber having to overcome his fear to rid his new home of ghosts is a simple yet ingenious idea that makes good use of Luigi's established character.

Not to mention, it's just plain fun to vacuum up ghosts and wads of cash wherever you go.
