10 Video Game Spin-Offs BETTER Than The Main Franchise
1. Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime was a revolution for the franchise. Traditionally a 2D sidescroller series, its transition to the 3D-era in 2002 saw developers Retro Studios turn Prime into a first person adventure game on Gamecube, retaining protagonist Samus Aran and taking place between Metroid and Metroid II: Return of Samus.
Placing a larger emphasis on story, we found Samus chasing Ridley to Tallon IV, a planet once inhabited by the Chozo that's become corrupted by Phazon. A substance brought to the planet five decades ago during a meteor strike, Samus discovers Space Pirates attempting to extract Phazon for their own ends as she investigates the Chozo Ruins.
It proved an outstanding success, showing that after an 8 year hiatus, Metroid could handle the transition to 3D and it successfully revived the franchise. Seeing two direct sequels and a DS spinoff, its an excellent trilogy worth revisiting and with a 4th one now in development for Switch, we cannot wait to go back.
