20 Video Game Twists That Were Completely Pointless
4. Samuel Hayden's Betrayal - DOOM (2016)
In 2016's DOOM, The Doom Slayer must once again face the legions of Hell, while being assisted by an android, Samuel Hayden. Though Samuel is cold and analytical towards the beefy marine, they appear to be on the same page, since they both want to shut down the portal to Hell for good.
But after the Slayer vanquishes the final boss, Samuel confiscates the silent hero's weaponry, hoping to harness its power for his own needs. The Slayer is then cast into an unseen location before the screen cuts to credits, signalling the sequel will centre around a major conflict with the duplicitous robot.
On the contrary, Samuel Hayden barely features in Doom Eternal. In the events between the two games, Samuel's body has been critically damaged, so he's out of commission for most of the main campaign. Samuel does feature in Eternal's DLC, but is retconned as an angelic being called a Seraphim, muddling the continuity.
Even though Samuel Hayden was a fascinating character, Doom Eternal would've played out almost exactly the same if his villainous turn was dropped entirely.
