10 Video Game Underdogs That Defied All Odds
2. Red (Pokémon Red And Blue)
Many kids at a young age are driven by imagination, having goals to be something utterly cool one day. Sometimes, that dream gets expedited, and for Red, protagonist of Pokémon Red and Blue, it allows him to accomplish his targeted objective, all the while overcoming a multitude of high-stake challenges.
Despite the world of Pokémon being mostly friendly in nature, there are multiple circumstances throughout the Kanto region that forces Red to adapt at every turn.
Randomly placed high-level Pokémon, trainers who seek to gain experience at his own expense, and the nefarious Team Rocket all aim to both stop Red in his tracks, and increase their own clout. Instead of falling back when the onset of opposition clear, Red and his Pokémon were able to successfully defeat the competition, gaining valuable experience with every battle.
All of this proved to turn the tide in favour of Red, who not only was able to repel Team Rocket, and their leader Giovanni, but best the Pokémon Champion, his rival from Pallet Town.
It was a self-fulfilling prophecy, whereby taking the route less travelled, putting in hard work, and grinding his way through the opposition that led Red to his ultimate achievement.
The Pokémon franchise, for the most part, tosses the player into the deep end. It turns out that this is for their own benefit, as original protagonist Red completed his improbable journey to become the very best, that no one ever was.
