10 Video Game Villains With Wasted Potential

5. Waluigi - Super Mario Bros

Thanos Telltale
Nintendo

When Wario was cast to play the antagonist of Super Mario Land 2 he was very clearly designed as little more than the “anti-Mario” but, over the years, has developed his own personality. This garlic-eating, money-obsessed and, if WarioWare is anything to go by, apparent game developer has had more starring roles than Mario’s own brother Luigi.

When it came for Nintendo’s mascots to play tennis together, it was obvious that the ne’er-do-well needed a doubles partner to take on the do-gooder brothers and thus Waluigi was born.

This strange, purple fellow caught the imagination of the internet because of just how weird he was. Looking like the resident meth addict of the Mushroom Kingdom, where Wario has his own goals and interests, Waluigi is really only interested in people as miserable as he is. Which, apparently, he only knows how to do via sports and karting games.

Despite appearing for over 20 years worth of spin-offs, Waluigi is still yet to make his debut in a mainline Mario game. His obvious faceoff with the green-clad plumber in a Luigi’s Mansion title has never happened and he’s not even starred alongside his brother once.

His appearances across the last two decades have shown he has more than enough weird skills and even popularity in his back pocket… but Nintendo continues to ignore Waluigi. No wonder he’s miserable!
