10 Video Game Villains With Wasted Potential
4. Derek C. Simmons - Resident Evil 6
Once a scientist, sometimes a SWAT team leader and with aspirations of world domination, Albert Wesker was a busy guy. After over a decade of build-up, he met his very final death at the end of Resident Evil 5 via two rockets to the moosh.
The problem, however, was this left a hole in the series and Capcom killing off every new antagonist in their side-games after one appearance wasn’t helping.
A lot of people don’t consider that one of the longest-serving villains in the Resident Evil series is the United States government. After all, they were Umbrella’s biggest customer for bioweapons and destroyed Raccoon City to hide that fact. Of course the franchise has only mentioned this on occasion, although it seemed like it might become the centre point of the series as RE6 approached.
Derek C. Simmons is one of the main antagonists of the game. A Government agent with his fingers in bioterror and also the Illuminati, again that is a lot for one man to juggle. But his calm, calculated exterior was akin to early-days Wesker and his abundance of power and connections made it feel like he could become the next great villain for the franchise and exert that control over our heroes.
Unfortunately, not only could Simmons not resist turning into a monster as has become standard fare in Resi, he barely gets through the first act of the game. Well that’s disappointing.
