Varied environments and back drops have always been a main draw for adventure games, and the second Tomb raider on the original PlayStation certainly has some interesting and memorable locales.

Lara this time is tasked with recovering a lost Asian dagger that has the power to turn its owner into a dragon but the story is not the memorable thing about this game. The world-spanning story took you to the Great Wall of China, Venice, an oil rig, Tibet and Chinese ruins - all being very engaging. All of these had a contrasting aesthetics so no one location overstayed its welcome.

Environments were also littered with collectables, complex puzzles and punishing enemies. Gameplay was designed with this geometry in mind, and it meant traversing hundreds of obstacles was tricky but there was a high skill ceiling for veteran players to aspire to.

Additionally, Lara was an auto-aiming acrobatic Terminator in combat, and keeping on the move was vital as varied enemy types could always throw out surprises - especially in some amazing boss fights.

Tomb Raider 2 was a game so out there in its design - appealing so easily to all ages - that some of my fondest gaming memories with my family come directly from this challenging classic and the rest of its series.
