6. Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time

Before this Prince of Persia game came out, the ancient series had been, shall we say, buried in the dunes of its title. Then Ubisoft picked it up and revamped it beautifully, giving it an irreverent and brilliantly written sense of humour, alongside a character that takes cues from the great Disney heroes.

It was funny, it was a little bit meta (such as the Prince sheepishly saying 'That's not how it happened' each time you die), and it had pioneering gameplay which let you manipulate time amidst all the backflipping, wall-running and scimitar-slashing.

Two more Prince of Persia games followed Sands of Time, looking to emulate its success, but their attempts to take the series in a darker direction meant they lost some of that charm that made this one so special. Despite their solid gameplay, sales went down, and the franchise fizzled out, consigned to the sands of- oh, never mind...
