10 Video Games That Are Barely Recognisable Today

7. Dynasty Warriors 1 - Dynasty Warriors 9

Hands up, I absolutely adore the Dynasty Warriors franchise, even though it’s progressively become one of the most weird series of games I’ve ever played.

Firstly they all pretty much tell the same story, in this case The Romance of The Three Kingdoms, but each add new twists, supplementary tales and characters, to the point that the 8th game was pretty much fit to burst.

And this all started out as a fighting game. Strange, right?

The First Dynasty Warriors was a fairly competent beat em up that was the West's first insight into the characters that would go on to tell the stories of Wu Shu and Wei way way way too many times for some.

Now comparing that to some of the later games is jarring enough, but just try looking and DW1 side-by-side with 9. Jesus, talk about a tone shift.

Dynasty Warriors 9 is, much like my Dong Zhou, a game that only a mother could love. It took relatively focused gameplay of old and added open world aspects - a strange upgrade system and more graphical drops than should be feasibly possible. It’s a messy, cluttered experience; bloated and overdone... and yet, I still bloody bought it. Help me.
