10 Video Games That Changed EVERYTHING When They Launched

5. GoldenEye (1997)

Resident Evil 4
Nintendo

The most successful video game based on Hollywood film ever released, 1997's GoldenEye changed the entire landscape for how the film and gaming worlds interacted with each other.

Just like the Pierce Brosnan film of the same name, the story of GoldenEye revolves around a criminal organisation harnessing a global satellite weapon system and attempting to launch an attack on London, with players taking over the role of James Bond and attempting to prevent that from happening.

As well as being a remarkably faithful adaptation of one of the classic Bond stories, GoldenEye stood out from what had come before in the industry for its unique take on first person shooters on platforms. Released for the N64, GoldenEye looked to take the genre away from where the likes of Doom had taken it before and bring it towards a more realistic place.

Stealth and methodically scanning the environment became far more important than in previous shooters, with GoldenEye requiring players to reload more strategically, make use of features like silencers and telescopic sights, and ensure the game's lack of health packs didn't come back to bite them.
