10 Video Games That Changed EVERYTHING When They Launched

6. Pac-Man (1980)

Resident Evil 4
Namco

Whilst it wasn't the first ever game released, Namco's Pac-Man was arguably the one that helped gaming really break into the mainstream. With its snazzy soundtracks and addictive gameplay, this was the perfect format for the arcade craze of the time.

It was also one of the first video games of its time to really try to appeal to as many people as possible, subbing out the themes of war and sport that were prevalent in most games at the time in favour of the bright colourful characters and maze theme to really cross out any potential divides between ages or genders. This was one of the first games that truly anyone could get behind.

On top of that, it brought with it one of the first examples of creating a flagship character and brand amongst gaming companies, with Bandai Namco launching Pac-Man sequels, merchandise, a TV show, countless crossover references and even a song by Buckner and Garcia.

With the first Mario Bros. not being released until three years after Pac-Man, this was historically the first time a gaming company had really found of way of establishing a mascot that everyone in the house could name and enjoy together.
