10 Video Games That Do One Thing PERFECTLY
5. Final Fantasy IX - The Setting
The Final Fantasy series is a strange one where almost none of the titles are related. This allows the developers to not be tied to one particular setting or genre, but the first 6 entries in the long-running franchise all share similar elements - airships, knights, castles. The old-time fantasy setting.
Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII stepped away from this. VII particularly breathed new life into the series with its steampunk setting. Final Fantasy VIII also ditched the more traditional setting for something more modern and realistic (you know, apart from the magic, time travel elements, monsters living on the moon...).
Now while these entries are both brilliant FF9 really felt like a breath of fresh air from the road that Square seemed to be going down. This was especially true for Western audiences, whose first exposure to a Final Fantasy game was likely Final Fantasy VII, so having a more traditional setting was a solid move at this point.
Everything in the world of Gaia fits perfectly. The knights and mages make a welcome return along with the castles and more traditional hero's tale. The early hours on the Mist Continent make it feel entirely mystical, especially with the city of Lindblum with its Regency and airships. Now, here's hoping it gets a full remake one day รก la Final Fantasy VII.
