10 Video Games That Immediately DEVASTATE You

9. Mass Effect 2

The Last of Us
EA

The original Mass Effect was praised for its characters, dialogue trees and worldbuilding. Through hours of playtime, gamers found themselves seeing through the eyes of their Commander Shepherd, formed bonds with their crewmates and the good ship Normandy felt like home.

Naturally, Mass Effect 2 puts this all in jeopardy from the off.

Whilst on patrol for enemy Geth forces, the Normandy comes under attack from an unknown ship. Bulkheads are ripped to shreds, the bridge becomes engulfed in fire and crew members are killed in the chaos. Joker, the ship’s pilot, has to be convinced by Shepherd to leave his post and not go down with the ship. Players hearts are thumping from the off, and then go cold as our player character throws Joker in an escape pod and then is blown out into space.

As Shepherd’s suit breaks down, they die of asphyxiation in the cold, black nothing. Sorry... what?!

It’s a shock to the system that really separates the sequel from what came before, pushing the Mass Effect story ahead two years to where Shepherd is brought back to life. Still, in the panic of this intro players wondered what the hell was going on and if anyone was safe at all. It put us all on tenterhooks for the entirety of Mass Effect 2 and 3 because you never knew what might happen next.
