Though The Dark Pictures Anthology kept up an impressively annual release pace between 2019 and 2022, fans are still waiting for the fifth game in the series, sci-fi horror romp Directive 8020, to come out.

The Lashana Lynch-starring outing was first revealed in a post-credits teaser trailer for 2022's Dark Pictures game The Devil in Me, though wasn't formally announced until summer 2024.

Earlier this year the game was dated for October 2, falling in line with the series' tendency to release close to Spooky Season, but back in July developer Supermassive Games confirmed that Directive 8020 had been pushed to the first half of 2026.

Supermassive's statement referenced the challenges of the games industry at present, while also announcing that the studio would be laying off up to 36 members of staff.

It's obviously very concerning news for Supermassive's future, though on the flip side, if the delay means that Directive 8020 is more polished than its predecessors - which, fun as they are, have always felt rough around the edges - it's probably worth missing out on that prime Halloween release date.
