10 Video Games That Killed Off The Wrong Character
8. Johnny Gat - Saints Row 3
There used to be a time when Saints Row meant something, back when there were no flying cars, no aliens, and thank God no Professor Genki.
Then Saints Row 3 happened. After too much criticism that Saints Row 2 was just a poorer man's GTA, it was time for Volition to radically mix things up. That involved killing the best damned character in the whole franchise, and worse it involved killing him off screen.
When Johnny Gat dies in the opening of Saints Row 3, there is nothing the player can do other than scream. "Please take Pierce instead! Even Shaundi will do!"
Unfortunately that doesn't happen, and Gat is gone.
In his place the player is left with two characters that serve their purpose well enough, yet they could never really compare to the raw charisma of Mr. Johnny Gat.
The death is such an egregious example of killing off the wrong character that Saints Row 4 retconned the whole thing and threw away a slew of 3's mediocre supporting cast.
Turns out Gat was simply kidnapped by aliens because he was a threat to their plans. At least you made it right in the end, Volition.
