10 Video Games That Made You Say "WTF Were They THINKING?!"
5. Embarrassing Product Placement - Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker opens with Big Boss leading his squad into Costa Rica to locate a hostile unit, who are allegedly transporting nuclear weapons. Based on that premise, you'd think Peace Walker takes itself very seriously.
But because of the gripping plot and intense tone, it's jarring every time you stumble upon some blatant product placement.
Now, this market technique has been used many times before in previous MSG titles. But Peace Walker utilises this ploy so rampantly, it feels like a parody. You can't walk anywhere without stumbling across Mountain Dew, Doritos, or Uniqlo shirts, even when you're in the jungle. The game even promotes outdated accessories like Walkmans. (Are Sony still selling those?)
Not only is relentless overmarketing like this annoying, it ruins the immersion. How can you take your mission seriously, when subsidiaries are figuratively ramming Famitsu magazines and Fritos down your throat every five seconds?
Worst still, the product placement doesn't make sense. When injured, you can use Axe deodorant as a recovery item... WHY would a substance designed to mask body order heal bullet wounds???
This shameless level of product placement is so excessive, the guys behind Pepsiman would tell Peace Walker to rein it in a little.
