4. The Volcano - Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil 6 may have been the "jump the shark" instalment in Capcom's survivor horror series, but the previous entry came pretty damn close.

Resident Evil 5 kicks off with Chris Redfield heading into an African town to stop the Ouroborous virus from turning the locals into zombies. Over time, he learns the plague has been spread by Umbrella leader, Albert Wesker, who infiltrated Chris' STARS unit during the first zombie outbreak.

So far, so suitably cheesy.

But during the showdown, things go nuts. After Chris crashes Wesker's jet, the former teammates must face off on an active volcano. As you look at your surroundings, you can't help but wonder how the franchise went from exploring a creepy mansion to... this? Fighting the final boss while surrounded by lava is Super Mario's MO, not Resident Evil.

Also, any player who tries to take this situation seriously gives up when they see Chris knock a five-ton boulder into magma with a single punch. How did he do that? Did the developers forget Chris Redfield doesn't have Goku-level superstrength?

And when you see Wesker's cartoonishly over-the-top death, you can't understand how the developers thought anyone could take this seriously.
