10 Video Games That Punish You For Caring

4. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

In most senses, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is an amazing game - perhaps the best stealth/action game of all time. From the large, well-crafted maps offering tons of creative freedom for the player to complete objectives to stealing equipment and personnel with the silly but satisfying fulton recovery system - and that killer soundtrack.

However, one thing Hideo Kojima's swan song for former employer Konami notably lacks is its central protagonist, Snake/Big Boss.

By casting Kiefer Sutherland in place of series mainstay David Hayter, Kojima blew up the game's already overinflated budget by god knows how much. As a result, the likely expensive Sutherland is used excruciatingly sparingly, resulting in a usually verbose character being closer to a silent protagonist.

Even worse is that this is, technically, justified in the story, as it's revealed at the end that all along you've been playing as a Big Boss decoy, retroactively justifying the character's contrasting personalities in his early and later appearances.

All of this is driven home by the fact that this version of Snake is also known as Punished Snake. So Kojima put it right in front of our faces the entire game. That's some top tier trolling. Hats off, sir.
