10 Video Games That Tried To Be The Next Big Thing (And Failed)

5. Lawbreakers

Lawbreakers was a hero shooter that aimed to dethrone Overwatch with its attempts at catering to a mature audience. Headlined by Cliff Bleszinski, the man responsible for Gears of War, the game failed due to various core factors.

The first is Cliffy B himself, whose aggressive promotion turned a lot of people off with marketing almost as infamous as Daikatana's. He kept hyping the game as the next big thing, but insulted a lot of potential players. This was best seen during his refusal to put the game on the Xbox, and how 'Xbox fanboys are salty.'

Not exactly the best way to show gratitude to the fanbase that you on the map.

The second factor is the game itself. While Lawbreakers featured a gravity mechanic that was interesting, the title catered to a hardcore audience. This meant that the skill ceiling was too high which turned off potential players and made the game less accessible.

When it came to visuals, the game sported a realistic art style that kept true to the 'mature' aesthetic. But this, in turn, led to the characters looking bland and generic - a big no-no in potential hero shooters.
