10 Video Games That Tried To Exploit Nostalgia (And Failed)

2. Alone In The Dark: Illumination

Star Wars Battlefront
Pure FPS

Before Resident Evil became king of survival horror gamed. Alone in the Dark set the groundwork. Released in 1992 across MS-DOS, it was gaming’s first 3D survival horror and launched to critical acclaim.

It spawned several sequels to varying reception but 2016 saw Atari take a different approach to revive the franchise with Alone in the Dark: Illumination. Featuring a co-operative focus and only being playable online, it saw you working with other players to solve mysteries within the horror setting.

Releasing only on PC, it felt more like a mix of Left 4 Dead and Resident Evil but failed to capture the good qualities of either and critics tore it apart. It was a poorly executed concept that failed to achieve it’s basic goals and buried the franchise once again.

Since its release though, series rights have been snapped up by THQ and leaves the door open for future sequels.
