10 Video Games That Were Too Damn Long

2. Metal Gear Solid V

The Metal Gear Solid franchise is one of the most influential and exquisitely crafted works that has ever graced the world of video games. Meanwhile Metal Gear Solid V is the black sheep of the family, and as hard as it tries to differentiate itself from its predecessors, it just never manages to reach the same heights.

The fact of the matter is MGSV starts out excellently. All of its systems work, the open world setting fits well with the Mother Base management, and the narrative, whilst sparse for a Metal Gear game, works through the environments and background information while adding an air of mystery. Then after a riveting final boss fight against the titular Metal Gear the game just... Tells you to do it all again? No wait, it's harder now.

At this point the game just stops dead and forces the player to do missions they've previously completed only now with different modifiers, such as being unable to bring any equipment, or not allowing them to be spotted. These operations really extend the game far beyond its natural limit and drain most of the fun that the missions presented the first time around. There are new bits scattered in that actually add to the narrative but they are few and far between.

Then you finally reach the end hoping for a climactic and exciting finale, only to be greeted by the very first mission and a plot twist that everybody who recognises Kiefer Sutherland's voice saw coming.
