10 Video Games That Were Too Damn Long
1. Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar's latest epic showcases exactly what modern video game narratives should be. Everything about the story is tense, emotional, and pretty damn fun. Couple this with some of the best voice work in the industry and everything is set up perfectly to make this game of the year.
Then Guarma happens.
Following hot on the heels of a staple of Rockstar games, a bank heist gone wrong, the player is left in the intense aftermath, two people have died and the gang is fractured. So obviously the best narrative decision is to drop you off on an island for two hours, while Rockstar figures out what should be happening in the main plot.
The worst part of this decision isn't that it destroys the pacing or even that the island itself is devoid of any of the world building the rest of the game benefits from. No, the worst part is that this is simply the beginning of a long slog to the finish.
Once back on American soil Arthur and co. progress through one chore after another that only seems to exist to hammer home how much of a bastard Dutch is. Then when the plot finally picks back up it only does so to cheat the player out of an impactful and bittersweet finale.
Just so they can spend 8 hours in an epilogue that reminds us how much everybody hated role playing as a sub par farmer in the first game.
